4 tips to help you find a reputable contractor

Florida is in the midst of hurricane season. While everyone certainly hopes that no big storms head this way, there is always a chance that one will. Once a hurricane hits, people need to have home repair jobs done. You might even have some that you want to finish without a storm arriving. In all these cases, you must ensure that you have a reputable contractor working for you.

First, determine whether you need a contractor or not. Some smaller projects, such as retiling the floor or possibly building a small patio, can be handled by a handyman. Other projects, such as changing where a wall is in the home, will require a contractor. You might opt to get quotes from both so that you can see what you're looking at for the full scope of the project.

Second, ask for references. Anyone reputable will have individuals or businesses that will support them. Be sure to call these people to make sure that they did have work done by the contractor.

Third, try to find someone for small jobs so you know who you can count on when you have major jobs. The last thing that you need to do is fall victim to a fly-by-night contractor who preys on people after a natural disaster.

Fourth, verify that the contractor is licensed. This will automatically run off some of the unsavory individuals who come out since they won't have a license. You can also ask to see a certificate of insurance, which can protect you if something does go wrong. Almost all reputable contractors will carry liability and workers' compensation coverage.

Even if you follow all these tips, there is a chance that you will run across a contractor who doesn't finish the job as you expected. If that person didn't abide by the contract you signed, you could pursue legal action to get the issue corrected if they won't make the corrections.
