Breach Of Contract

Gabrielle Union settles breach of contract suit against BET

You may know her as the newscaster in “Being Mary Jane,” or the DEA agent from “Bad Boys II.” For many of us Floridians, she’s the wife of Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade. However you know her, she’s been in the news lately because of a very public contract dispute with the BET television network.

Union filed a lawsuit in 2016 for negligent misrepresentation and breach of contract, claiming that BET had reneged on a range of promises they’d made to her. Among them, that no season would be over 13 episodes in length. She says that BET tried to fit 20 episodes into season four in an attempt to squeeze more out of her before she was due a raise. She was making $150,000 per episode for the fourth season and was set to pull down $165,000 every episode in season five.

According to reports, Union’s lawsuit was asking for $3 million in damages as well as a promise to keep every subsequent season under 13 episodes. The two sides were able to come to a settlement in late December, and she will continue working for the show in the foreseeable future. The details of the settlement were not released.

If you feel an individual or a group has breached a contract by changing its terms after the fact or failing to live up to the original terms, you may want to speak with an attorney. A lawyer who’s well-versed in contract disputes can go over the terms and may be able to help you come to an agreeable settlement.
